Fresh Update On FBI Files Release On Tinubu Emerge Hours To Supreme Court Hearing Of Presidential Tribunal Judgement Appeals

Bayo Onanuga, the media aide to President Bola Tinubu, has claimed that there is a renewed effort to pressure the United States Government into disclosing the dossier on the president.

In a statement shared on his verified X account on Saturday, Mr. Onanuga alleged that Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the candidates of the PDP and Labour Party (LP) respectively in the February presidential election, are spearheading the campaign to compel the FBI to release documents related to Mr. Tinubu’s 1993 forfeiture case.

He asserted that these two individuals are advocating for the FBI to unveil the documents in order to incorporate them in their appeal against the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) that affirmed Mr. Tinubu’s election.

Both Mr. Atiku and Mr. Obi are presently contesting the decision of the PEPC at the Supreme Court.

Mr. Tinubu emerged as the victor in the presidential election held on February 25. However, both Atiku and Mr. Obi contested the results, pointing to irregularities and concerns about eligibility.

Their separate petitions to the presidential tribunal centered around Mr. Tinubu’s academic credentials and the forfeiture of $460,000.

According to the official court records, on January 10, 1992, Magistrate Judge Rosemond of the Northern District of Illinois granted the request for the freezing of funds in 10 bank accounts belonging to Mr. Tinubu due to suspicions of their connection to narcotics-related activities.

Subsequently, Mr. Tinubu and US authorities reached an agreement, resulting in the forfeiture of $460,000, while over $900,000 was returned to him.

Earlier this month, Atiku’s legal team successfully obtained the academic records of Mr. Tinubu from the Chicago State University (CSU). The former vice president is seeking permission from the Supreme Court to include these findings as part of his appeal.

The Supreme Court has set Monday for the hearing of the appeals. In Mr. Obi’s appeal at the Supreme Court, his lawyer, Livy Uzoukwu, submitted 51 grounds challenging the judgement of the presidential election court.

In Atiku’s appeal, lead lawyer Chris Uche presented the case on 35 grounds.

According to Mr. Onanuga’s statement, he claimed that the primary opposition candidates are collaborating with an individual named Aaron Greenspan. Greenspan has reportedly petitioned a court in Washington DC, seeking to compel the FBI to disclose all documents pertaining to Mr. Tinubu.

Mr. Onanuga further stated that the FBI had initially agreed to provide the documents to Mr. Greenspan by the end of October. However, it is alleged that the American is now utilizing the notification of the Supreme Court proceedings in Nigeria to petition the US Court for an emergency motion regarding the case.

“On Thursday, Peter Obi forwarded to Greenspan, the Supreme Court notice of hearing for the appeal that will begin on Monday 23 October.

“We do not know the brief Obi gave Greenspan, but Greenspan rushed to the District Court in the US capital, with an emergency motion asking the court to compel the FBI to produce documents on our President immediately. The FBI had earlier agreed to produce the documents at the end of October,” he said.

The presidential aide additionally asserted that Mr. Greenspan provided false information to the US Court, suggesting that the establishment of the Supreme Court panel was a last-minute decision aimed at blocking the admission of the FBI files.

Mr. Onanuga argued that the FBI files hold no relevance to the current legal proceedings in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the presidential aide accused the American individual of making unfounded accusations against the judiciary. He contended that Mr. Greenspan’s assertion that the Supreme Court hearing date was abrupt and calculated to preclude the release of the FBI documents was unfounded. According to Mr. Onanuga, Mr. Greenspan believes that the FBI documents bear significance to the case in Nigeria.

“After reading Greenspan’s motion, one is left with the impression that the guy is very ignorant of our laws and our democracy and he is nothing but an interloper, in a matter clearly outside US jurisdiction,” he said.
