Mohammed Usman Baba and Umar Mohammed, injured. The incident occurred at a vulcanizer shop when the shop owner, Mohammed Usman Baba, was using the gas cylinder for a customer and later placed it to recharge.
Witnesses reported that the cylinder overheated, prompting Zakari, an apprentice at the shop, to attempt to cool it down with water—a common practice in such situations. Unfortunately, as he doused the overheated cylinder, it exploded, instantly killing him and injuring both Mohammed and his son.
Faisal Avuya, an eyewitness, recounted, “When Zakari poured the water on the cylinder, it blew up, scattering his body. The shop owner and his son were also injured in the explosion.”
Umar Mohammed, the shop owner’s son, sustained serious abdominal injuries and is expected to require surgery. Local authorities and residents are urging greater awareness of safety measures when handling gas cylinders to avert similar incidents in the future.
Explosions Strike Niger Community
In another incident, suspected bomb explosions in the Bassa community of Shiroro LGA, Niger State, have reportedly resulted in the death of a farmer, Dauda Haruna, and left four others, including three siblings, seriously injured.
Reports indicate that the explosions occurred on Thursday morning between the Bassa and Gwadara communities as the victims were on their way to the farm to harvest crops. Residents informed Daily Trust that the first explosion occurred while the three siblings—Mali (20), Nehemiah (14), and Jona (15)—were riding a motorcycle, with the second explosion detonating as rescuers arrived, resulting in the death of one of them, Dauda Haruna.
The father of the three children, Mr. Enoch, commented while at IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna, where the victims were receiving treatment, that this was the second instance of bomb explosions in Bassa within a month. He reported that two of the children and one rescuer, Abdullahi Shuaibu, each lost a leg in the incident.
