Vaccine Alliance, Gavi, in collaboration with Bavarian Nordic, has reached a significant milestone in the fight against mpox. On Wednesday, the two organizations announced an Advance Purchase Agreement to secure 500,000 doses of the Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) mpox vaccine. This vaccine will be distributed to countries in Africa grappling with the current mpox outbreak.

The agreement marks a crucial step in addressing the urgent need for vaccines in Africa. Mpox, a viral disease similar to smallpox, has been spreading in various regions, making timely vaccination essential. The MVA-BN vaccine, developed by Bavarian Nordic, has shown promising results in trials and is now poised to make a substantial impact on public health in affected areas.

Gavi’s role in this initiative underscores its commitment to improving health outcomes in developing regions. By securing these vaccines, Gavi and Bavarian Nordic aim to bolster Africa’s response to the outbreak, potentially preventing further spread and protecting vulnerable populations.

The delivery of these vaccines will be carefully coordinated to ensure they reach the regions most in need. This effort is expected to strengthen Africa’s capacity to manage the mpox outbreak and provide a critical tool in the global fight against infectious diseases.
