Veteran Nigerian gospel singer and songwriter, Toun Soetan, widely known as Evangelist Shouet, has passed away at the age of 73. The late music icon was celebrated as the original composer of the beloved Christian chorus Darling Jesus, a song that remains a cornerstone in churches across Nigeria.

According to reports, the late evangelist was not only a gifted musician but also a dedicated mentor who shaped the careers of numerous gospel artists through her music college. Kunle Bakare, a former Secretary of the Oyo State chapter of the Entertainment Writers Association of Nigeria, described her as a spiritually inspired minister whose music conveyed profound messages. “She will also be remembered for her music college, where she trained so many gospel music players, most of whom are reigning today,” Bakare said.

Gospel musician Peters Olaniyi Olusegun confirmed her death in a Facebook post, writing, “We just lost another legend this morning, Mummy Toun Soetan. May the Lord be with the family and Daddy Titus Soetan.”

Beyond Darling Jesus, Evangelist Soetan was also known for other acclaimed gospel songs, including Ke Pe Jesu and Cast Your Burdens. Her works continue to resonate in Christian worship gatherings nationwide, ensuring her legacy endures.
