Governors, Traditional Rulers Hold Historic Meeting to Define Constitutional Role for Traditional Institutions in Nigeria

On October 30, 2024, the Presidential Villa hosted a landmark meeting between the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, marking a significant step toward enhancing the role of traditional leaders in governance. Chaired by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazak of Kwara State, the meeting underscored the commitment to bridge traditional authority with modern governance for community safety and national cohesion.

Addressing the press on behalf of the governors, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun explained that the core discussion centered around the constitutional recognition of traditional rulers. He noted that an active bill in the National Assembly is working to broaden the scope of responsibilities for these leaders. Following a comprehensive exchange of views, a joint committee was established to integrate the insights shared by both parties into a formal proposal, aiming to enhance the role of traditional rulers in peacekeeping, governance, and local security.

Governor Abiodun further emphasized the invaluable role traditional leaders play in intelligence gathering and community policing, stating that their deep-rooted knowledge of local communities is essential for effective law enforcement. The forum also addressed pressing issues like food security, gender-based violence, and the impact of local government autonomy on traditional institutions.

Representing the traditional rulers, the Etsu Nupe expressed appreciation for the collaboration, highlighting the critical role traditional leaders play in fostering peace and stability.
