Gumi Weighs In on Tax Reform Debate, Advocates Fair Review Of VAT Component

According to ireporteronline, northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional rulers have expressed concerns that the proposed reforms, if enacted, could exacerbate economic difficulties in the region. This criticism has further deepened the ongoing divide between northern and southern stakeholders.
The bills, which passed their second reading in the Senate last Thursday, have sparked nationwide debates. Addressing the issue, Gumi acknowledged the potential of the reforms but highlighted the need to reassess the Value Added Tax (VAT) component, which has been the most contentious part of the proposal.
“I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all,” Gumi stated in an interview with the Daily Post.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has clarified that the reforms are not intended to disproportionately favor Lagos and Rivers States, contrary to some speculations, but aim to improve the overall quality of life for Nigerians.
