Heathrow Reopens to Flights After Closure Creates Global Chaos
Flights at Heathrow Airport in London resumed late Friday after a significant fire caused a power outage, leading to the temporary closure of Europe’s busiest airport. The fire, which broke out on Thursday night at a nearby substation, forced the airport to halt all operations, stranding passengers and disrupting global travel……..READ MORE
Heathrow officials worked swiftly to reopen the airport, which had been scheduled to handle 1,351 flights and serve up to 291,000 passengers on Friday. However, many flights were diverted to other airports across the UK and Europe, while long-haul flights returned to their points of origin.
The airport confirmed that only a limited number of flights would be operating on Friday, mainly to reposition aircraft and bring planes into London. Full operations are expected to resume by the following morning.
Heathrow’s Chief Executive, Thomas Woldbye, apologized for the inconvenience caused to travelers, acknowledging the disruption and assuring that the airport aimed to return to normalcy on the next day. “We are very sorry about all the inconvenience,” he said.
Authorities have stated that the incident is not being treated as suspicious, though investigations are ongoing. The London Fire Brigade is focusing on the electrical distribution equipment involved in the fire.
The closure has sparked frustration among airlines, which have raised concerns over the failure of such critical infrastructure. The aviation industry now faces potential financial losses running into tens of millions of pounds, with disputes likely over who should bear the costs.
Woldbye defended the airport’s response, emphasizing that back-up systems and procedures were in place, though he acknowledged that certain incidents, such as this one, are beyond full mitigation.
