That’s The Reality” – Regina Chukwu Speaks On Pressure Facing Actresses

According to Ireporter Online, Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu has alleged that the English-language segment of Nigeria’s film industry was characterised by a “sex-for-roles” culture during the period she attempted to build her acting career.

Speaking during an interview on Oyinmomo TV, the Yoruba movie star recounted her experiences while trying to secure acting opportunities before eventually deciding to focus exclusively on the Yoruba film industry.

Regina claimed that aspiring actresses seeking recognition in the English-language movie industry were often subjected to pressure to engage in sexual relationships with influential figures before advancing in their careers.

She recalled attending several auditions at a hotel in Surulere, Lagos, where many established actors and actresses were present, but said her repeated attempts to secure roles proved unsuccessful.

The actress further alleged that some individuals used fake movie scripts as a means of luring aspiring actresses into compromising situations, adding that she found the English-language sector less welcoming than the Yoruba film industry.

Despite being of Igbo origin, Regina said she felt more accepted in the Yoruba movie industry because she was born and raised in the South-West, where she developed stronger cultural and professional connections.

She also expressed regret that her decision to concentrate on Yoruba films had limited her popularity in some parts of the country, noting that while she enjoys recognition across Lagos and other South-West states, she is not widely known as an actress in her home state of Enugu.

The actress’s comments have since sparked conversations on social media about working conditions, opportunities and alleged exploitation within parts of the Nigerian entertainment industry.
