Obi dismissed Akande’s statement as a blatant attempt to rewrite history, emphasizing that the #EndSARS protests were a genuine fight against police brutality and a demand for good governance.

Reacting to Akande’s remarks, Obi’s media aide, Umar Ibrahim, condemned what he described as a deliberate distortion of facts, calling the claims insensitive to the memory of the victims.

He stressed that the movement was not politically motivated, warning against attempts to politicize the sacrifices made by young Nigerians during the protests.

Akande’s Controversial Claims
In a recent podcast interview, Akande alleged that the Obidient Movement was behind the #EndSARS protests, claiming it was a foreign-backed scheme to weaken Tinubu’s influence ahead of the 2023 elections.

Akande was quoted saying:

“The Obidients were behind #EndSARS. It was planned in America and brought in just to stop Tinubu. It was well-funded, but they failed to form a political party.”
Obi’s Camp Fires Back
Obi’s media aide dismissed Akande’s claims as misleading and divisive, urging him to stop making unfounded accusations.

“#EndSARS was a spontaneous movement against police brutality, corruption, and injustice. It had nothing to do with any individual’s presidential ambition,” he stated.
Similarly, Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, labeled Akande’s comments as an insult to the memory of #EndSARS victims.

“Rather than spreading falsehoods, Akande and his associates should focus on the real issues affecting Nigerians—economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and bad governance.”
A Call for Truth
The #EndSARS movement, which began on October 7, 2020, called for the disbandment of SARS and later evolved into a broader demand for government accountability. The protests ended in tragedy on October 20, 2020, when security forces allegedly opened fire on peaceful demonstrators at Lekki Tollgate.

Despite attempts to rewrite history, supporters of the movement insist that #EndSARS was a people-driven revolution—not a political agenda.
