Tensions Explode PDP Races To Stop Wike-Bala Mohammed Showdown
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stepped in to mediate the growing rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, urging both leaders to put aside their differences inTensions Explode PDP Races To Stop Wike-Bala Mohammed Showdown
the interest of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja, PDP leaders, including acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara, expressed concern over the escalating internal disputes, warning that unresolved conflicts could weaken the party’s electoral chances.
The tension between Wike and Bala Mohammed resurfaced after the Bauchi governor criticized President Tinubu’s tax reform bills, calling them a threat to state economies. In response, Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, accused Mohammed of trying to sabotage progressive economic policies. The war of words escalated when Mohammed fired back, labeling Wike a “transactional politician” with a history of self-serving alliances.
Despite the heated exchange, some PDP leaders downplayed the impact of the feud, attributing it to personal differences rather than a party crisis. PDP National Organizing Secretary, Umar Bature, insisted the dispute would not destabilize the party, while Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, accused the ruling APC of fueling the conflict out of fear of PDP’s potential resurgence.
Osadolor called for reconciliation, urging both leaders to “close ranks for the sake of the party and Nigerians”. He emphasized that both Wike and Bala Mohammed are critical figures in PDP and should prioritize unity over personal grievances.
Meanwhile, former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, recently suggested that the opposition must unite to challenge the APC in 2027. Osadolor welcomed the statement, hinting that El-Rufai could return to the PDP, the party that first gave him national recognition.
However, PDP NEC member, Diran Odeyemi, disagreed with the claim that APC was behind the crisis, arguing that the party’s internal indiscipline and failure to enforce discipline among erring members were the real reasons behind the lingering disputes.
As PDP navigates internal tensions, party leaders stress the urgency of reconciliation to bolster its chances in the 2027 elections and present a formidable challenge to the APC.
