HND Upgrade: FG Set To Give Polytechnics Degree Status

The Federal Government has announced plans to end the longstanding Higher National Diploma (HND) dichotomy, unveiling reforms that will allow polytechnics to award degree qualifications.

According to Ireporter Online, the policy, which seeks to position technical and vocational education as a cornerstone of national development, was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

Speaking at a high-level retreat attended by council chairmen, commissioners of education, rectors, registrars, and bursars, Alausa described the reform as a historic policy shift that would remove decades of discrimination against polytechnic graduates.

The minister explained that the initiative will elevate polytechnics as centres of excellence in Nigeria’s higher education system while retaining their focus on hands-on, industry-oriented training. “This reform will place polytechnic education on a stronger footing, without losing its practical orientation,” he said.

Alausa added that the policy aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises job creation, industrial growth, and human capital development. He stressed that Nigeria’s competitiveness depends on a workforce capable of addressing real-world challenges, with polytechnics playing a central role.

With degree-awarding status, polytechnics are expected to attract stronger industry partnerships, increased funding, and greater public confidence. The minister assured that the transition will be guided by clear standards, robust quality assurance mechanisms, and strong regulation to ensure global competitiveness.

Addressing participants on the theme “Transforming Polytechnic Education in Nigeria: Innovation, Good Governance and Sustainability for National Development,” Alausa highlighted the critical role of polytechnics in building a skills-driven economy. He urged institutions to promote innovation through entrepreneurship centres, research hubs, and industry linkages, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, agri-technology, digital manufacturing, and climate-resilient solutions.

On governance, the minister emphasised transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership, calling for fiscal discipline, timely audits, prudent resource management, and zero tolerance for corruption. He also stressed sustainability, urging polytechnics to enhance internally generated revenue, adopt eco-friendly practices, and build resilient infrastructure that reduces dependence on imports.

Acknowledging challenges such as funding gaps, outdated facilities, and societal bias in favour of university degrees, Alausa said the opportunities ahead outweigh the constraints. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting polytechnics through policy reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and strategic partnerships.

The minister further announced a special TETFund intervention this year to upgrade polytechnic engineering schools with modern equipment, following a similar intervention for 12 medical colleges last year. He concluded by urging participants to become agents of transformation at their institutions, stressing, “The future of our youth, our economy, and our nation depends on the transformation we ignite here today.”

Education experts at the retreat described the announcement as a watershed moment for technical education, noting that it is expected to boost enrolment, inspire staff and students, and strengthen polytechnics’ contributions to sectors such as manufacturing, technology, agriculture, and renewable energy.
