House Of Reps Advances Bill To Grant Voting Rights To Nigerians Abroad

During Wednesday’s plenary, lawmakers discussed the significance of extending voting rights to Nigerians living outside the country. Speaker Tajudeen highlighted the proposal as a crucial step toward promoting inclusive democracy.
The bill, which initially passed its second reading in July, has now been referred to the Committee on Electoral Matters for further review. After additional debate on Tuesday, it has been forwarded to the Constitution Amendment Committee for closer examination.
In related news, the Senate is expected to approve President Bola Tinubu’s external loan request of $2.2 billion (about N1.77 trillion) today (Wednesday). The loan is part of Nigeria’s external borrowing plan to finance the N28.7 trillion 2024 budget, with a focus on addressing a ₦9.7 trillion budget deficit. Senate President Godswill Akpabio has instructed the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts to review the request and submit a report within 24 hours.
