HURIWA Accuses Tinubu’s Cabinet Of Orchestrating Vendetta Against Lawmaker In Abia Election Battle

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called out the Minister of Women Affairs, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, for allegedly engaging in a prolonged vendetta against Amobi Ogah, who won the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency seat in the 2023 House of Representatives election.

Onyejeocha, who contested and lost the seat to Ogah, has been accused by HURIWA of orchestrating a campaign of harassment and legal persecution against the lawmaker. The rights group claims that recent charges filed against Ogah by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) are part of a calculated effort to discredit him.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA expressed concern over the actions of Onyejeocha, who now serves as the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, and her alleged refusal to accept her electoral defeat.

The charges against Ogah, documented under Charge No: CR/650/2024, include accusations of false declaration under oath, publication of injurious falsehood, perjury, and criminal defamation. HURIWA believes these charges are rooted in personal vendetta, with the support of the Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who was Onyejeocha’s legal counsel during the election petition proceedings.

HURIWA criticized Onyejeocha for not focusing on her new ministerial role and instead, allegedly using her influence to target Ogah. The group also expressed disappointment with the Nigeria Police Force, accusing them of being complicit in what they described as the framing of Ogah.

The association has urged the Minister of Justice to uphold the rule of law and avoid using public office for political persecution. HURIWA views the situation as a clear example of political vendetta, driven by Onyejeocha’s inability to move on from her electoral loss.

The rights group concluded by calling for an end to the legal harassment of Ogah and urged all parties involved to focus on their duties and responsibilities to the Nigerian people.
