HYPREP: Ministers of Environment And Niger Delta Storm Ogoniland For Massive Commissioning And Project Inspections(Photos)

In a testament to the transformative vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the oil-rich land of Ogoniland recently witnessed a significant stride in environmental restoration and community development. Over the weekend, the Honorable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE, visited Ogoniland to commission pivotal projects and inspect ongoing initiatives led by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).

The event marked a milestone in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to renewing hope among Nigerians. Accompanied by the Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ogoni Trust Fund Incorporated, Dr. Nwielaghi Barieenee Micheal, along with other board members, the Honorable Ministers embarked on a comprehensive tour of projects that have become the talk of the Niger Delta Region.

The first stop was the remediation site in Ogale Community, Eleme Local Government Area. Despite the unfortunate pause in cleanup efforts due to local disputes, the Ministers underscored the federal government’s unwavering commitment to the project. Their visit highlighted the pressing need to resolve conflicts and continue the essential remediation work.

Following this, the Ministers, supported by their diligent teams, proceeded to commission the Bomu Community and Kporghor Water facilities in Gokana and Tai Local Government Areas, respectively. They also launched the pilot cookstove project, designed to benefit Ogoni women by promoting sustainable energy solutions.

The highlight of the day was the celebration of the 2024 International Mangrove Day at the Bomu waterfront. Here, the Ministers unveiled the GROWCOON for cultivating mangrove seedlings and participated in mangrove planting activities, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to environmental restoration.

Day two was equally momentous, beginning with a visit to the palace of His Royal Majesty King (Dr.) Suanu Baridam JP, the Bene-Mene and Kasimene Bangha Kingdom. The Ministers inspected several significant HYPREP projects, including the Ogoni Specialist Hospital, the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration with an Integrated Contaminated Soil Management Centre (ICSMC), and the Buan Cottage Hospital. The tour concluded with the commissioning of the Kporghor Water Facility.
