I Remain Authentic LP Candidate In Lagos – Awamaridi
Ifagbemi Awamaridi, a former Labour Party candidate in Lagos State, has stated that he is still the party’s candidate in the March 18 gubernatorial election.
Awamaridi, who was also the National Coordinator of the Labour Party Concerned Stakeholders, made the announcement at a news conference in Lagos on Thursday to round out his electioneering campaign.
Awamaridi stated that he never resigned from the governorship race, as some National leaders of the party claimed.
He claimed to be the party’s legitimate flagbearer in Lagos state, having won the state primary election in July 2022.
He stated that the party leadership had forwarded his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“In July 2022, INEC published the name of Labour party candidate and the name is Prof. Ifagbemi Awamaridi based on the fact that I won the primaries.
“The party forwarded the name to INEC around July 5 and INEC published the name around July 25 and that name subsists.
“Later on, I discovered that the name has changed and some party leaders decided to organise a substitution primary and claimed that I have withdrawn,” he alleged.
Awamaridi stated that he informed INEC that he had not withdrawn from the race, adding that a candidate could only withdraw on the basis of a signed Letter of Oath or Form 11B from INEC.
He stated that the party was attempting to change many things in the country, and that INEC irregularities would not be ruled out.
He claimed that the party had forged documents in 22 states, including Edo and Ebonyi, with the help of some INEC officials.
As a result, he urged the Nigeria Police to investigate the issue of forged documents by some national officers and bring them to justice.
According to Awamaridi, his candidacy is currently before the Supreme Court.
Mrs Dayo Ekong, the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party, has refuted claims that Awamaridi was the party’s candidate for the state’s upcoming gubernatorial election.
Ekong told reporters that Awamaridi was being used by the opposition party to sow discord within the Labour Party.
