ICPC Issues Strong Warning to Defy Supreme Court Ruling on LG Autonomy

Dr. Musa Aliyu, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has announced a firm stance against anyone defying the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on local government autonomy. The ICPC is prepared to take vigorous action against officials or individuals who disregard the court’s decision.

On July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court affirmed the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Councils. The court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, unanimously supported a federal government suit aimed at reinforcing local governments’ independence. The ruling also rejected efforts by state governments to dissolve democratically elected councils.

At the recent 6th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA), Aliyu emphasized the ICPC’s dedication to enforcing accountability and combating corruption. The statement was released by ICPC Spokesperson Demola Bakare.

Aliyu stated, “Our focus remains on holding critical stakeholders accountable and reducing corruption. Next month, we will convene a summit with these stakeholders to discuss collaborative efforts.”

He added, “Local governments must be politically independent. Any state official who violates this Supreme Court decision will face severe consequences for gross misconduct and abuse of office. The ICPC is ready to act against anyone defying the court’s ruling on local government autonomy.”

Aliyu also addressed the transnational nature of corruption, calling for collective action from nations. He expressed confidence in NACIWA’s objectives and principles, which reflect a strong commitment to fighting corruption across member states.
