IGP Reshapes Police Legal Arm, Elevates Section to Directorate

According to Ireporter Online, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the elevation of the Nigeria Police Force Legal Section to a full-fledged Directorate of Legal Services, as part of ongoing strategic reforms to strengthen institutional capacity.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Directorate will now serve as the apex legal authority within the Police, responsible for coordinating legal services, enhancing prosecutorial processes, providing legal training, reviewing policies, and fostering engagement with prosecutorial bodies, the judiciary, and other stakeholders in the justice system.

The move, aimed at aligning the Force’s legal operations with international law enforcement standards, is expected to improve prosecutorial effectiveness, transparency, and professionalism.

To lead the Directorate, the IGP appointed Assistant Inspector General Ohiozoba O. Ehiede as its pioneer Director. Ehiede, recognised for his wealth of experience and distinguished service, is tasked with driving the Directorate toward excellence and ensuring that legal processes within the Force meet global best practices.

Egbetokun urged police legal officers and other stakeholders to support the new Directorate in advancing justice delivery, boosting prosecutorial success rates, and strengthening public confidence in police operations.
