Nigerian businessman Obi Cubana has weighed in on the ongoing detention and legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu, stressing the need for due process and fairness in handling the case. According to Ireporter Online, Cubana made the remarks during a recent interview, where he emphasized that the matter should not be resolved through coercion or undue pressure but through lawful and measured steps.

He noted that the government should apply the same standard of justice to Kanu as it does to others, adding that resolving the situation requires patience and a gradual legal approach. Cubana expressed optimism that the process would ultimately lead to Kanu’s release at the appropriate time.

Kanu was initially arrested in 2015 by Nigerian authorities over allegations bordering on terrorism, treason, and the operation of an unlawful organization. He was granted bail in 2017 but subsequently left the country following a military operation in his hometown. In 2021, he was rearrested abroad and returned to Nigeria under circumstances that sparked widespread legal debate and criticism.

The Federal Government later resumed his trial, accusing him of inciting violence through broadcasts and activities linked to his group. In 2022, the Court of Appeal discharged him and raised concerns over the manner of his return to Nigeria; however, further legal actions were initiated to reinstate the charges against him.

The case has remained a focal point of national discourse, particularly in the South-East region, where supporters have organized protests and sit-at-home actions calling for his release. In November 2025, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Kanu on multiple terrorism-related charges, ruling that his actions contributed to violence and unrest, and subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment.
