According to reports, former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ chances of winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following the announcement of head coach Eric Chelle’s final squad. The announcement, which confirmed the 28 players set to travel to Morocco, was made on Thursday.

Mikel Obi, a key figure in Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON triumph, shared his support for the team on social media, urging the squad to “bring it home.”

Nigeria will enter the tournament aiming to secure a fourth continental title, even as preparations have been overshadowed by a disappointing end to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Fans are hopeful that success at AFCON can restore confidence in the national team.

Earlier, Chelle had released a 55-man provisional list before trimming it to the final 28. The squad features five uncapped players, while notable names such as Christantus Uche, Maduka Okoye, and Tolu Arokodare were left out.

Despite Nigeria’s depth of talent, inconsistent performances in recent matches have tempered expectations among some supporters. However, the team’s history of rising to the occasion in major tournaments keeps optimism alive. With stars like Victor Osimhen and other in-form players, the Super Eagles are considered capable of mounting a strong challenge in Morocco.
