Jubilation As Abia PDP Records Victory In Court (DETAILS)

Court

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has rejected the appeal filed by Okey Igwe, the former running mate to the late Prof. Uchenna Ikonne, the former PDP candidate in the 2023 Abia gubernatorial election. Igwe’s appeal contested the candidacy of Dr. Jasper Uche, who was selected by Okey Ahiwe as his running mate after Ahiwe emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a new primary election that replaced late Prof. Ikonne.

In its decision to dismiss the case, the Appeal Court ordered Igwe to pay the Abia PDP, Ahiwe, and Uche the sum of N500,000 as litigation costs.

This appeal by Igwe followed a prior judgment by an Abuja High Court, which had already ruled against Igwe’s lawsuit targeting the PDP, Ahiwe, and Uche over his substitution as the running mate to the new PDP candidate.

Responding to the ruling, Elder Abraham Amah, the Vice Chairman of Abia PDP, released a statement expressing satisfaction with the victory at the Appeal Court. He emphasized that this victory was not only for the parties directly involved but also for the entire Abia PDP, the state’s residents, and democracy as a whole. He noted that it underscores the judiciary’s pivotal role as the ultimate protector of democracy.
