Just In: Edo Police Commissioner Calls For Empowerment Of Correctional-Service To Reform-Criminals

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, has urged the federal government to adequately empower the Nigerian Correctional Service to function effectively as reform centres for criminals. He also called for greater cooperation from the judiciary to help keep criminal elements away from society.

Commissioner Adegboye made this call on Thursday while parading 15 suspects arrested for various crimes in the state. He emphasized that many of these suspects are not suitable to live among the general public due to their criminal tendencies.

“Many of the suspects are ex-convicts who have served various jail terms but returned to crime upon their release. This is a serious dimension of criminality in the country,” Adegboye said.

He advocated for an amendment to existing laws to implement stronger punitive measures and prevent repeat offenses. “Some people have turned kidnapping into a fast business. The government should empower the Correctional Service more to reflect their name and be able to reform the inmates,” he added.

One notable case mentioned by Adegboye involved a suspect named Asene Ogah, who was arrested for alleged kidnapping shortly after being released from a seven-year jail term. The arrest of Ogah was celebrated by his community, which even sent representatives to the police command to ensure he does not return to their midst.

Adegboye also appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to cooperate with security agencies in the fight against insecurity in the state. “We also want to appeal to the judiciary to cooperate with us. We don’t want these people back in society. We need to amend the laws for strong punitive measures,” he concluded.
