Following Shehu’s suspension, Akindele Egbuwalo assumed the position of acting national manager for the N-Power programme. The situation intensified with the revelation of a memo implicating Betta Edu, the now-suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, who allegedly requested a transfer of N585 million to a private account.

Rasheed Zubair, media aide to Edu, defended the action as a process following due diligence, dismissing the leaked memo as a tactic of blackmail.

President Bola Tinubu responded to the unfolding scandal by suspending Edu and instructing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the ministry’s financial dealings.

The origins of the rift trace back to President Bola Tinubu nominating Halima Shehu as CEO of NSIPA. Initially, Delu Yakubu, now a senior special assistant to the president on humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, was selected for the position.

Concerns among some senators and officials in the presidency led to Yakubu’s replacement with a presidential aide. Subsequently, Tinubu secured Shehu’s confirmation as NSIPA CEO in October.

Insiders revealed that Edu intended to collaborate with Yakubu due to greater comfort, leading to dissatisfaction when Shehu assumed the position.

Disputes over financial matters further strained their relationship, with Edu, as the minister, making withdrawals from NSIPA accounts without informing Shehu, the NSIPA head. Shehu’s response was to transfer the remaining balance out of accounts accessible to Edu. She has disclosed to the EFCC the three accounts where the money was moved.

Staff in the office of the accountant-general of the federation (AGoF) were made signatories to these accounts, ensuring access to funds for the humanitarian ministry when needed. Despite reports suggesting Akindele Egbuwalo’s appointment as acting CEO, the presidency has not issued official communication on the matter, contributing to confusion at NSIPA.

Unlike Betta Edu’s case, where a clear statement from the presidential spokesman outlined the handover process, the lack of official communication has left uncertainty about who should act in Shehu’s absence.
