Kogi Assembly Under Fire: Adeyanju Criticizes Move To Sack EFCC Chairman, Points To Yahaya Bello

Nigerian lawyer cum activist, Deji Adeyanju, has condemned the Kogi State House of Assembly for demanding the removal of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, instead of addressing issues of corruption under former Governor Yahaya Bello‘s administration.

Adeyanju expressed disappointment in the Assembly’s stance, arguing that they should be probing the widespread looting that allegedly took place during Bello’s tenure rather than engaging in political theatrics.

Ireporteronline recalls that the Assembly had accused the EFCC of acting unlawfully and unprovoked, suggesting that the anti-corruption body was targeting Bello and posing a threat to the current governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo.

In a statement, Adeyanju emphasized the importance of justice and transparency in Kogi State.

He criticized the Assembly for defending Bello, whom he described as a “fugitive,” and called their actions a “dance of shame” that neglected the interests of the people of Kogi.

Adeyanju further called on Kogi citizens to reflect on their leadership choices, urging them to stop electing leaders who prioritize personal gain over public service and the rule of law.

A statement by Adeyanju reads: “I express deep concern over the Kogi State House of Assembly’s recent resolution calling for the removal of EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

“Instead of focusing on the massive looting of the state’s treasury under Bello’s administration and probing him, the Assembly have joined in the dance of shame of defending fugitive Bello.

“The people of Kogi deserve answers, not theatrics. Yahaya Bello’s tenure was marred by corruption, mismanagement, and financial impropriety, resulting in dire economic straits for the state.

“The Assembly’s actions are a blatant disregard for justice and the welfare of the Kogi people. It’s time for citizens to reflect on the kind of leaders they elect. Leaders without moral and ethical grounding prioritize their interests over public service. I urge the people of Kogi to stop electing individuals who have no regard for the rule of law or public service.

“The EFCC’s mandate is to fight corruption, and they must be allowed to do their job without interference. Any attempt to shield corrupt individuals from justice undermines the Nigerian people’s fight against corruption. I stand with the people of Kogi in demanding transparency, accountability, and justice. Kogi deserves better.”
