Lagos Lawn Tennis Club Celebrates 130 Years Of Excellence With Grand Festivities

According to reports, Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (LLTC), one of Africa’s premier tennis institutions founded in 1895, has commenced its week-long 130th-anniversary celebrations, highlighted by a “Walk for Life” event.

The festivities featured a public lecture by Professor Anthony Onipede titled “Tennis as a Long‑Life Sport: Health, Wellness, Community Engagement and 130 Years of Service.” In his presentation, Onipede emphasized tennis as a medium for socialization, relaxation, and lifelong wellness. He noted, “Tennis builds the soul of the community. In a digital world, the club provides a space for genuine connection and interaction.” The professor also outlined strategies to enhance tennis in Nigeria, including supporting grassroots initiatives, promoting inclusivity and healthy living, embracing sustainable innovation, and nurturing youth talent.

LLTC President Adeyinka Adewusi reaffirmed the club’s status as a leading tennis hub on the continent, boasting world-class facilities that have attracted global icons such as Arthur Ashe and the Williams sisters. Adewusi highlighted the club’s commitment to talent development, revealing that many young players begin as ball-boys and progress to international careers.

He further detailed the club’s community-focused programs, offering training, mentorship, and stipends for children aged 5 to 15, designed to foster a passion for tennis. Adewusi described Onipede’s lecture as a highlight of the anniversary celebrations, offering insightful perspectives backed by extensive research.

The week-long celebration will culminate in a grand gala night, where distinguished members and personalities who have contributed to the club’s growth will be honored. “It will be a night of pomp and pageantry,” Adewusi said, “as we celebrate a national recreational legacy and honor the vision of our founders and past leaders.”

Also speaking at the event, Honourable Justice Dr. Adesuyi Olatere Olagbeke, a member of the Board of Trustees, praised LLTC for maintaining a culture of excellence through both colonial and post-colonial eras. He commended the club’s enduring provision of facilities for tennis, squash, billiards, and snooker, and reflected on its role as a social and cultural hub for Nigerians and expatriates alike.

The celebrations featured a wellness awareness walk, media parley, anniversary cocktail, public lecture, and the gala night, marking LLTC’s 130-year journey of sportsmanship, community engagement, and national pride. Dignitaries in attendance included Professor Onipede, President Adewusi, Publicity Secretary Kunle Oyekanmi, Honorary Secretary Feranmi Kehinde, Board of Trustees members Yemisi Ola and Justice Olagbeke, and past officials such as Vice-President Olatunde Lado and Past President Tope Abere.
