The recognition, drawn from a survey of over 20,000 city dwellers worldwide and Time Out’s editorial network, celebrates Lagos’s vibrant culture, rich culinary scene, and dynamic community vibes.
Lagos, Africa’s most populous city, stands proudly as the only African city apart from Cape Town (ranked second) and Accra, Ghana (44th), to secure a coveted spot on the international list.
The criteria for ranking encompassed factors such as food quality and affordability, cultural richness, nightlife, community vibes, access to green spaces, historic sites, and overall positive experiences.
The report encourages global citizens to explore Lagos, describing it as a city that caters to diverse tastes. “Whether you’re a staunch mainlander or from Lekki, there’s something for everyone in Lagos.
The report highlights the city’s ongoing expansion, citing the live-work-play concept of Eko Atlantic City and the burgeoning growth in Epe, situated on the north side of Lekki Lagoon.
Lagos’s quality of life takes center stage in the report, with 96 percent of locals expressing happiness, 98 percent attesting to the city’s beauty, and a remarkable 92 percent friendliness rating.
The city’s key attractions, including Victoria Island’s resorts and nightlife, Kuti’s Bistro in Ikeja for reliably delicious food, and the serene Oniru Beach, receive special mention.
This global accolade comes as a positive contrast to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2023 report, where Lagos was labeled the fourth-worst city to live in the world.
The recent recognition showcases Lagos’s resilience, growth, and unwavering appeal as a global destination, reinforcing its status as a city that captivates and welcomes all who venture into its vibrant embrace.
