Rumours that the company’s billionaire CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is planning to step down have been labeled “false” by Meta.

Insiders told the Daily Mail UK that the 38-year-old had decided to step down as CEO of Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

They stated that the decision “will not affect” Zuckerberg’s multibillion-dollar virtual reality project, which has cost the company at least $30 billion.

However, Andy Stone, a company communications official, tweeted on Tuesday that the rumors were false. “This is false,” he simply tweeted.

The rumors followed the company’s recent announcement that it would lay off a large number of employees as profits declined.

Investors and analysts blamed the company’s demise on Zuckerberg and other executives shifting their focus to the Metaverse, which has yet to gain traction.

Shares of the social media behemoth have dropped nearly 70% in the last year, but were trending upward following the report.
