Meghan, who has been in the country along with Prince Harry to advocate for mental health support for wounded soldiers and young girls, disclosed her Nigerian ancestry during a podcast in October 2022, revealing that she was “43% Nigerian.”

Addressing the audience in Abuja, Meghan embraced her Nigerian roots, referring to Nigeria as “my country” and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to delve into her heritage. She acknowledged the qualities associated with Nigerian women – bravery, resilience, courage, and beauty – and expressed her admiration for these characteristics.

The Duchess of Sussex also participated in discussions about the importance of mentorship for young women and the challenges women face in leadership roles in Nigeria. Alongside female industry leaders like Okonjo-Iweala, Meghan emphasized the need for gender equality and opportunities for women in all spheres of society.

Reflecting on Okonjo-Iweala’s historic position as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO, Meghan highlighted the significance of breaking gender barriers while also acknowledging the long-overdue nature of such milestones.
