Minister Of Niger Delta Development, Momoh, Addresses Climate Change Impact On The Niger Delta Region

The Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr Abubakar Momoh FNSE, participated in a crucial event organized by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and presided over by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN.

The event, the public presentation of the 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), focused on the theme “Facilitating a Weather-Resilient Economy through Early Warnings for All to Foster Renewed Hope and Sustainable Development.”

In his goodwill message, Minister Abubakar Momoh underscored the severe impact of climate change on the Niger Delta region. He lamented that the Niger Delta people have become some of the greatest victims of climate change, attributing this to the persistent challenges of oil spillage and gas flaring in the region since the discovery of oil in Oloibiri well, the first commercial oil well in Nigeria.

Minister Momoh acknowledged the commendable efforts of NIMET in timely weather predictions, which have not only assisted his ministry but also benefited Nigerians in general by enabling better planning for unforeseen weather changes. He urged collaborative efforts to address the root causes of climate change, particularly the issues of oil spillage and gas flaring.

Drawing attention to the detrimental effects of these activities, Minister Momoh called upon the Minister of Gas, who was also in attendance, to expedite measures to end gas flaring in Nigeria by 2030. He emphasized the need for the Niger Delta region to transition to green energy, advocating for a safer and more sustainable future. Minister Momoh highlighted the impact of climate change on the livelihoods of Niger Delta communities, including displaced populations and disrupted farming activities.

In conclusion, Minister Abubakar Momoh urged continued collaboration among relevant ministries and agencies to address the challenges posed by climate change, particularly in the Niger Delta region. He expressed optimism that concerted efforts would lead to a safer and better community across the region, ensuring a resilient and sustainable future for the people.
