Speaking passionately after a comprehensive inspection of the Benin Electricity Generation Company power plant in Ihovbo, under the auspices of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Adelabu expressed deep concern over the sector’s lackluster performance despite significant governmental support.
Assuring citizens of resolute action, the minister pledged to address the myriad challenges hindering optimal operation of power plants, particularly those owned by the government. He underscored the urgency of removing obstacles that impede the seamless functioning of these facilities, positioning them at a disadvantage compared to privately-owned plants.
Highlighting the substantial investments poured into the energy sector, Adelabu lamented the persistence of electricity shortages plaguing Nigerians, despite the nation’s possession of state-of-the-art power-generating infrastructure. He emphasized that Nigeria possesses the requisite resources and infrastructure to meet its energy needs but is hampered by capacity distortions and operational inefficiencies.
Delving into specifics, Adelabu outlined the impressive capabilities of the Ihovbo power plant, boasting four gas plants with a total capacity of 500 megawatts. Despite their excellent condition and minimal operational history, with each plant running for less than three years, only one turbine is currently operational, contributing a mere fraction of its potential output.
Expressing dismay at the dismal 20% capacity utilization rate, the minister underscored the urgent need for optimization to maximize returns on the government’s substantial investments. He affirmed his commitment to tackling the sector’s challenges head-on, assuring Nigerians that swift action would soon translate into tangible improvements in power generation and distribution.
In conclusion, Minister Adelabu’s resolute stance signals a renewed vigor in the government’s efforts to revitalize the power sector. With a clear vision and unwavering determination, he aims to unlock the latent potential of federal investments, ushering in a new era of reliable and accessible electricity for all Nigerians.
