NAFDAC Seizes Petrol Tankers Illegally Transporting Cooking Oil in Lagos
National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully intercepted and seized petrol tankers illegally transporting cooking vegetable oil in Lagos. This alarming discovery underscores a serious public health risk, as these tankers, originally designed for petroleum products, are not suitable for transporting edible goods.
The operation took place in various parts of Lagos, where NAFDAC officials, acting on intelligence reports, stopped the tankers. Upon inspection, it was found that these tankers, which had previously carried petrol, were being used to transport cooking oil—a blatant violation of safety standards.
The misuse of petrol tankers for transporting edible oil poses a significant health hazard, as residues from petroleum products can contaminate the oil, leading to potential food poisoning and other severe health issues. NAFDAC has reiterated the importance of adhering to strict safety protocols to ensure that food items are transported in containers that meet regulatory standards.
Speaking on the incident, a NAFDAC spokesperson emphasized that the agency is committed to safeguarding public health by preventing such dangerous practices. The spokesperson also warned that those involved in such illegal activities would face the full force of the law.
The seized tankers have been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute the individuals responsible for this breach of safety regulations. NAFDAC has called on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could compromise food safety.
This seizure is a reminder of the crucial role that regulatory bodies like NAFDAC play in ensuring the safety and quality of food products in Nigeria. The agency’s swift action in Lagos serves as a deterrent to those who might consider engaging in such unlawful practices, reinforcing the message that public health cannot be compromised.
