NANS Threatens Protest Against School Closures During Ramadan In Northern States
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the governors of Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi states to reverse their decision to shut down schools for five weeks during the Ramadan fast. Failure to comply, the student body warned, will result in nationwide protests……READ MORE
In a statement on Monday, NANS National Public Relations Officer, Samson Adeyemi, condemned the decision, calling it a violation of students’ rights to uninterrupted education. He argued that the move discriminates against non-Muslim students and could hinder academic progress.
Adeyemi emphasized that prioritizing religious observances over education sets a dangerous precedent. He pointed out that the Nigerian Constitution and international treaties guarantee the right to education for all citizens, making the school closures unjustifiable.
NANS urged parents, educators, and civil society organizations to support their call for the immediate reopening of schools. If the policy is not reversed within the given timeframe, the association vowed to take legal action and organize mass demonstrations to protect students’ educational rights.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also spoken out against the policy, with its President, Daniel Okoh, warning of potential legal action. CAN described the closures as discriminatory and detrimental to education in the affected states, which already have a high number of out-of-school children.
