GENDER BILL AND THE FOLLY OF NIGERIAN WOMEN

Hon Princess Adekemi Adewunmi Ekiti State PDP Gubernatorial Aspirant 2022 in phone interview with media Crew blow hot, as she express herself that with a heart filled with trepidation, I have waited for the outcome of the Gender Bills on Women inclusiveness and in dismay, I received the news of Tuesday, the First of March, 2022, the day the National Assembly threw out this bill, voting against this and spitting in the face of every Nigerian woman.

I must say that this day would go down in history as a dark one as it clearly depicts the tragedy Nigerian women are being forced to live with everyday.

You may be wondering, what is it about these bills, what do the women want? why are they particular about these bills? Why do they crave inclusiveness? Well, let’s see, the bills do not seek to throw out the power of the man, it is already clear that power means so much to them, we only seek to achieve Gender Balancing in both appointive and elective leadership positions of our dear country. These are simply harmless Bills canvassing for adequate Women representation in the various Arms of Government and in Intra-Party leadership and administrative positions.

Who does not know that a woman, when involved in the socio-economic and political activities of any country is like a woman involved in the upbringing of her own child, nothing matters but the growth and success and development of the child in all ramifications.
The world knows this, supports this, but sadly, our dear nation in this 21st century has refused to embrace this trajectory.

It is calamitous and even frightening that in the 21st century, the Nigerian Legislature would largely vote against adequate Women representation in Governance and Policy Making. It is a tragedy and I cannot help but ask “Where do we go from here?”

How do we accept this archaic decision by men who still believe that a women’s place is in the certain quarters of a home and nothing more. Completely going against what the woman stands for especially in this month that celebrates the woman and all of her achievements.
Asides the slap on the face of the woman, it also speaks lowly of us as a country and belittles us in the face of other nations.

I am convinced that the Pro-Women Lawmakers on this matter are of the PDP stock. This is not a surprise because the issue of the 35% Affirmative Action is boldly entrenched in the Constitution of the PDP, Chapter 1, Sub Section 7, where it is clearly spelt out that “In nomination for Party Offices, not less than 35% shall be reserved for Women.” Theoretically PDP has taken the lead in Women’s inclusiveness in Party Politics.

At this juncture, it must be brought to the fore that majority of Nigerians are disappointed, frustrated and feel grossly disrespected by the rejection of the Gender Equality Bills by the National Assembly. No wonder we saw some contests by women rejecting this decision by the National Assembly which I personally believe cannot be the “final decision”.

We don’t want so much, and I say it again, we don’t want to throw out the men if that is the fear!

The women have nothing to prove, this is not a battle of wits or a battle of power, we just want to be considered as credible partners.
We only want that these archaic notion and representation of the woman should stop.

We want these bills to be reconsidered and a favourable decision agreed upon.

We want The National Assembly to adopt the 35% Affirmative Action which is the most acceptable global standard on Gender inclusion.

These requests will in no way throw out the men, it only involves us in the discourse of nation building and you will agree that this is not too much to ask..
