National Security Concerns: Reps Launch Probe Into Cryptocurrency And Digital Asset Transactions

The House of Representatives has taken a decisive step towards investigating the national security implications surrounding cryptocurrency, blockchain, and other digital asset transactions.

This decision was reached following the adoption of a motion presented by Rep. Isiaka Ibrahim (APC-Ogun) during a plenary session.

Rep. Isiaka highlighted the escalating global concerns regarding the potential national security risks associated with cryptocurrency transactions conducted through cryptocurrency exchanges. He emphasized that these exchanges facilitate money laundering activities by criminals and terrorists, posing significant threats to consumer and investor security.

In response, the House committed to investigating various aspects of digital asset transactions, including international money transfer operators, payment gateways, cloud computing infrastructure, and online peer-to-peer marketplaces operating in Nigeria. The aim is to identify existing threats to national security and identify legislative gaps that may compromise the country’s security interests.

Specifically, the investigation will delve into the status of the E-Naira on the global cryptocurrency platform, examining the incurred costs, procedural undertakings, and statutory compliance involved in its creation.

Furthermore, the House resolved to engage relevant stakeholders to facilitate the establishment of necessary legislation and regulations governing digital asset transactions. This includes scrutinizing the legal status and compliance of operators in the sector, as well as investigating their potential involvement in infractions such as money laundering and illicit transactions.

In a bid to ensure accountability and transparency, the House vowed to oversee the engagement of the National Security Adviser’s office and other relevant agencies in tracking and recovering illicit funds or assets associated with digital asset transactions.
