Ogechi, who had just completed her academic clearance in preparation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, was tragically struck by the tanker while attempting to cross the road.
According to sources, Ogechi had joyfully exchanged pleasantries with her classmates after completing her clearance, eagerly anticipating her mobilization for the NYSC. Renowned for her academic excellence, she had achieved distinction in accounting and was regarded as a shining star in her department.
Tragically, her promising future was abruptly cut short when she was first hit by a tricycle and then subsequently crushed by the fast-moving tanker as she attempted to cross the road.
The news of Ogechi’s death sparked outrage among students at the Polytechnic, leading to initial protests before the intervention of the institution’s management and the Students Union Government.
Despite the gravity of the incident, neither the Polytechnic nor the Abia State Police Command has issued an official statement on the matter as of the time of reporting.
This tragic incident echoes a similar occurrence late last year, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the state.
