Newly Elected Chairmen Targeted In Fiery Attacks! Rivers State Elections In Complete Meltdown

Governor Siminalayi Fubara swore in the newly elected council chairmen on Sunday, despite mounting opposition. The Action Peoples Party secured 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions, with their candidates being loyal to Fubara, who is locked in a power struggle with his former mentor, Nyesom Wike.

In response, thugs opposed to the election results attacked various local government secretariats, setting fires, vandalizing properties, and clashing with authorities.

Violence broke out in multiple areas, including Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua, where explosions and arson destroyed key government buildings.

This unrest followed the withdrawal of police officers from the 23 local government secretariats, ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The withdrawal left the secretariats vulnerable, worsening an already volatile situation. Fubara had earlier warned of potential violence, and his concerns materialized as armed thugs sought to prevent the newly sworn-in officials from resuming office.

The growing political instability in Rivers State is becoming a national security concern. The ongoing battle between Fubara and Wike, along with the wider influence of political godfathers, continues to destabilize governance in the state.

Political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and elder statesmen like former President Goodluck Jonathan, are being urged to intervene and restore peace. Rivers State cannot afford further turmoil, especially during a challenging economic period. The focus of governance should shift back to serving the people, rather than engaging in personal power struggles.
