Mo Abudu To Creatives: Build Local Streaming Platforms After Showmax Exit

According to Ireporter Online, Abudu made the call while reacting to reports suggesting that Canal+ may be considering shutting down the streaming service Showmax as part of cost-cutting measures following its acquisition of MultiChoice.

In a post shared on Instagram, the media entrepreneur emphasised the need for African ownership and control of the continent’s storytelling platforms, noting that Africa possesses a vast reservoir of culture, traditions and compelling narratives that deserve global visibility.

She stressed that creatives across the continent must take responsibility for building sustainable business models tailored to the realities of the African market rather than relying solely on foreign-backed platforms.

Abudu explained that her digital platform, EbonyLife ON Plus, was created to amplify African stories and provide opportunities for local content creators to showcase their work.

She acknowledged that indigenous streaming platforms are still in their early stages but maintained that consistent effort, patience and collaboration would help strengthen them over time.

Abudu further noted that Africa’s entertainment industry can grow significantly by studying successful global models and adapting effective strategies to suit local markets while preserving the continent’s unique storytelling identity.

Expressing optimism about the future of the industry, she described the current situation as an opportunity for Africans to build strong platforms capable of serving local audiences and competing globally.
