A TikTok video depicting men dressed in camouflage uniforms, chanting, and performing a parade has been circulating on social media since early August 2023.

The video is accompanied by claims that these individuals are soldiers from the West African country of Niger and are sending a message to Nigeria’s President that they mean business.

In the video, the men engage in various performances, with one running a machete across his throat while others showcase machine guns, sniper rifles, and rocket launchers.

The purpose of these displays seems to be intimidation, as the description often implies: “Niger republic soldiers displaying their strength, to remind Tinubu that they are not playing.”

However, this claim is inaccurate. Niger lies along the northern border of Nigeria, whose president is Bona Tinubu. He also chairs the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), an organization that includes Niger.

In July 2023, a coup in Niger resulted in the detention of elected President Mohamed Bazoum, the arrest of government ministers, border closures, institution closures, and a curfew.

Ecowas and Tinubu condemned the coup and hinted at the potential use of force to remove the coup leaders.

On August 10, Ecowas announced its intention to establish a “standby force” to potentially intervene in Niger and restore democracy.

Despite the claims made in the video’s description, there are indications that it does not show soldiers from Niger.

The presence of red, gold, and green flags on street poles contradicts Niger’s flag colors of orange, white, and green.

A Google reverse image search of the video’s first frame led to several French-language TV news reports about a military parade in Senegal on April 4, the country’s independence day.

Senegal, which borders the Atlantic Ocean on the western edge of Africa, does have the flag colors of red, gold, and green.

The original video was uploaded on TikTok by the user @loeildulion_ on April 4 and describes the uniformed men as Senegalese special force soldiers.

This confirms that the video was filmed in Senegal on April 4, 2023, which is four months before the coup in Niger, and it does not feature soldiers from Niger.
