Nigeria Celebrates 25 Years of Democracy:  Jonathan , Shettima,  Akume , Momoh and Key Figures Reflect On Progress And Future Prospects(Video)

The 25th Democracy Day Public Lecture, held on June 11th, 2024, at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, celebrated 25 years of Nigeria’s unbroken democratic journey. The theme of the event, “25 Years of Enduring Democracy: Prospects for the Future,” set the stage for reflection and forward-thinking on Nigeria’s democratic progress.

Key figures, including Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Abubakar Momoh and other notable dignitaries, were in attendance.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in his welcome address, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices of national heroes who fought for democracy and highlighted Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan reflected on the resilience of the Nigerian people and the journey from military rule to democratic governance. He praised the courage of figures like General Abdulsalami Abubakar for facilitating the transition to civilian rule and stressed the need for continued unity and democratic consolidation.

Keynote speaker, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency Aminu Bello Masari, highlighted the challenges and milestones of Nigeria’s democratic journey. He pointed out that the endurance of Nigeria’s democracy, despite historical interruptions, is a significant achievement that should inspire confidence in the nation’s future.

Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, Minister of Niger Delta Development, attended the event, symbolizing the ongoing commitment of his ministry to support national initiatives and collaborate on advancing democratic values. His presence highlighted the ministry’s role in ensuring that the progress and development achieved through democracy are inclusive and beneficial to all regions, especially the Niger Delta.

In conclusion, the 25th Democracy Day Public Lecture was not just a celebration of the past 25 years but a reaffirmation of the commitment to a democratic future. The inclusion of various political and regional representatives, including Engr. Abubakar Momoh, underscores the collective effort required to sustain and build upon Nigeria’s democratic gains.
