Nigeria To Deploy 200 Special Forces To Türkiye For Elite Military Training – Defence Minister

According to Ireporter Online, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has announced that Nigeria and Türkiye have reached a fresh agreement for the immediate deployment of 200 Nigerian Special Forces personnel to Türkiye for advanced military training.

The minister made this known during an interview on the sidelines of the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF2026) held in Antalya, Türkiye, following high-level discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Guler. The forum, themed “Mapping Tomorrow, Managing Uncertainties,” brought together global leaders, diplomats, and policymakers to address pressing international security and governance issues.

Gen. Musa explained that under the new arrangement, Türkiye has approved a training quota for 200 Nigerian Special Forces operatives, who will be sent for immediate training upon final administrative processes. He added that the agreement also covers future military exercises, with the first joint drill expected later in the year as both countries deepen defence collaboration.

He further disclosed that Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed to expand cooperation into joint defence equipment production and military technology transfer, describing the partnership as a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities.

The minister noted that both countries share long-standing diplomatic ties dating back to Nigeria’s independence in 1960, adding that Türkiye has become a strategic partner in defence development. He emphasized that Nigeria stands to benefit from Türkiye’s extensive experience in military hardware production and counterterrorism operations.

Gen. Musa also highlighted ongoing discussions aimed at improving defence industrial cooperation, including co-production of military equipment, exchange programmes for officers and soldiers, and expanded technical collaboration.

He pointed out that while Nigeria has battled insurgency and asymmetric warfare for over 17 years, Türkiye has faced similar security challenges for decades, making the partnership mutually beneficial in building operational experience and capacity.

The Antalya Diplomacy Forum, which hosted participants from about 150 countries, featured thousands of global stakeholders, including heads of state, ministers, diplomats, and security experts, who engaged in discussions on global security, political stability, economic development, and technological advancement.
