Nigerian-British Politicians Make History In UK Elections

The United Kingdom witnessed a historic moment as the Labour Party’s general election led to a significant shift in power. The opposition party, led by Keir Starmer, unseated the Conservative Party, which had been dominant for fourteen years. Among the elected members to the House of Commons were six British politicians of Nigerian descent. These individuals include newly elected MPs and incumbents who successfully defended their seats.

Five of these politicians belong to the Labour Party, while one is from the Conservative Party. They will serve their constituencies for up to five years, beginning their journey on July 17, 2024, with the State Opening of Parliament.

Elected Politicians:

Kate Osamor
A British Labour politician, Kate served as the MP for Edmonton from 2015 until 2024. She was the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development from 2016 to 2018 and is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group parliamentary caucus.

Chi Onwurah
Born to a Nigerian father in 1965, Chi has been re-elected as the Labour MP for Newcastle Central and West. She emphasized unity and collaboration in her victory speech, pledging to represent all constituents.

Bayo Alaba
A Labour councillor and former soldier, Bayo became the first Labour MP for Southend East and Rochford. He expressed gratitude to his voters and volunteers, highlighting the collaborative effort behind his success.

Kemi Badenoch
A Conservative politician, Kemi served as Secretary of State for Business and Trade and retained her seat as MP for North West Essex with 19,360 votes. She thanked her campaign team and vowed to represent her constituents’ best interests.

Taiwo Owatemi
The Labour MP for Coventry North West since 2019, Taiwo defended her seat with a landslide victory. She expressed deep gratitude to her voters and pledged to continue amplifying their voices.

Florence Dauta Eshalomi
A Labour and Co-operative party member, Florence transitioned from the abolished Vauxhall seat to the newly created Vauxhall and Camberwell Green constituency. She thanked her constituents for their trust and looked forward to working together.
