Nigerians Must Endure Fuel Subsidy Removal For Long-Term Benefits – Omotayo

Ayo Omotayo, the Director General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), has called on Nigerians to endure the current hardships resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies, emphasizing that the long-term benefits will eventually outweigh the temporary challenges.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Omotayo acknowledged the economic difficulties triggered by the fuel subsidy removal initiated by President Bola Tinubu. However, he reassured Nigerians that the sacrifices made today would yield positive outcomes in the medium and long term.

“Most of the benefits will be in the medium and long term. In the short term, the government has introduced palliatives to support those most affected by the subsidy removal. Adjustments to spending are necessary, as the immediate gains are minimal. Nonetheless, the long-term benefits will compensate for the sacrifices made today,” Omotayo stated.

A Necessary and Timely Decision

Despite the economic strain following the sudden removal of the subsidy, Omotayo argued that the decision was both necessary and timely to prevent the nation’s economic collapse. He noted that maintaining the subsidy was financially unsustainable, as Nigeria was inadvertently subsidizing fuel consumption in neighboring countries, including Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone.

“The subsidies we were paying were simply unimaginable. We were effectively subsidizing fuel not only within Nigeria but also in neighboring countries. Any government committed to success must make tough decisions, and this move by President Tinubu was crucial to steering Nigeria away from collapse,” Omotayo remarked.

Commending Presidential Resolve

Omotayo praised the President for demonstrating the political will to take decisive action, even in the face of public discontent. He acknowledged that while many Nigerians perceive the policy as harsh and feel more time was needed, it remains a critical step toward economic stability.

“No meaningful reform is easy, as it often involves temporary sacrifices. However, for us at the National Institute, we believe this decision was essential and commend the President for his resolve,” he concluded.
