Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Prof Pate lamented that the brain drain syndrome has deprived the health sector of its most skilled professionals. He highlighted the current imbalance in the distribution of healthcare professionals across the country, emphasizing the concentration of doctors in urban centers like Lagos and Abuja.

The minister expressed concern over the departure of trained medical personnel and stressed the need to address the underlying issues driving this trend. He noted that the Japa phenomenon is not unique to Nigeria but is a global occurrence affecting countries like India, the Philippines, and other parts of Africa.

Prof Pate underscored the importance of expanding training opportunities and improving working conditions to retain healthcare professionals. He acknowledged the dedication of those who choose to remain in Nigeria despite the allure of opportunities abroad, citing examples of committed individuals within the healthcare sector.

Efforts are underway to enhance training programs, improve work environments, and address issues such as long working hours to support healthcare workers and prevent burnout. The government is collaborating with relevant bodies to implement measures that recognize the value of healthcare professionals and encourage their retention within the country.
