Niger’s Finance Minister Crying, Facing Firing Squad After Coup? – Fact Emerge

Since late July 2023, a video has circulated online, depicting a man in a white shirt tearfully wiping his face with a green scarf.

The video is accompanied by a claim that the man is Ahmat Jidoud, Niger’s minister of finance, who is purportedly facing execution unless he accounts for stolen funds within 48 hours.

The caption suggests that this is a consequence of the recent military coup in Niger.

However, the video actually features Marou Amadou, Niger’s former minister of justice, and the incident occurred in 2021, not related to the recent coup. Comments on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok have identified the man as Amadou, and the original clip, posted on several Niger-based Facebook pages in December 2021, confirms his identity.

The event captured in the video took place during the launch of the Centre for Studies and Research on Climate in Africa and Human Security, an initiative founded by Amadou, in Niamey, Niger’s capital, on December 27, 2021. Photographs from the event show Amadou wearing the same attire as seen in the video.

Given this evidence, it is clear that the video’s claim is false, and the emotional man in the video is Marou Amadou, not Ahmat Jidoud.
