Senate’s NNPCL Probe Met with Skepticism Amid Mounting Public Distrust

The Nigerian Senate’s latest move to investigate over ₦210 trillion in financial discrepancies linked to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has been met not with surprise, but with an air of resignation among citizens who have grown accustomed to anticlimactic probes in the oil sector.

It wasn’t until last week that the corporation’s new Group CEO, Bayo Ojulari, appeared before the Senate. Having spent just over 100 days in office, Ojulari requested additional time to address the 19 audit queries—a request the Senate granted, with a three-week extension.

Still, public confidence remains shaky. Analysts and citizens alike argue that the Senate’s long history of probes—particularly in the energy sector—has rarely resulted in concrete action.

From the ₦1 trillion fuel subsidy scandal in 2012 to the 2022 revelations of mass oil theft, outcomes have often been inconclusive or politically muted.

Wadada attempted to downplay the situation, stating no funds had been “stolen” but rather “not yet accounted for”—a distinction many view as politically cautious.

The real challenge, observers note, lies in the Senate’s ability—or lack thereof—to confront a state-owned oil entity whose leadership is appointed by the presidency.

With a legislature dominated by the ruling party, the question of genuine independence looms large.

According to IReporter Online, critics argue that the transformation of NNPCL into a limited liability company under the 2021 Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) was supposed to usher in transparency and commercial accountability.

Transparency, swift referral to anti-graft bodies, and genuine follow-through will be essential to dispelling the belief that this is merely another theatrical performance in Nigeria’s long-running accountability saga.
