Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has revealed how he has successfully managed diabetes for over four decades, despite the condition having no known cure.

According to Ireporter Online, the former president attributed his long-term stability to a disciplined lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, regular physical exercise, adequate rest, routine medical checkups, and strict compliance with prescribed medication.

Obasanjo made the disclosure on Sunday during the launch of the “Lagos to the World” expedition, a global road journey designed to raise awareness on cancer, promote early detection, and encourage African integration. The event took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Speaking at the event, the former leader stressed the importance of healthy living and early medical intervention, while commending the initiative spearheaded by entrepreneur and BMW enthusiast, Erik Nwagwu, in honour of his late mother and sister who both died from cancer. He praised Nwagwu for turning personal tragedy into a campaign aimed at saving lives.

Obasanjo further explained that he was diagnosed with diabetes over 40 years ago and has since learned to manage the condition through strict lifestyle discipline. He noted that regular physical activity remains central to his routine, disclosing that he plays squash three times a week when available.

He also cautioned against poor dietary habits, stressing that food choices play a major role in health outcomes. According to him, rest is equally essential, alongside exercise and proper nutrition.

He summarized his approach to wellness under what he described as “DREMS,” meaning Diet, Rest, Exercise, and Medical care, urging Nigerians to prioritise regular health screenings and early diagnosis as key steps to long-term wellbeing.
