Odinkalu To Malami: EFCC Is Only Practicing What You Taught Them

According to Ireporter Online, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, has sharply criticised ex–Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, over his recent claims that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is acting with political bias against him.

Odinkalu, reacting in a statement shared on X on Sunday, dismissed Malami’s allegations and suggested that the anti-graft agency was merely operating in line with practices established during Malami’s tenure in office. He argued that the former justice minister had little moral ground to question the conduct of the commission.

In his remarks, Odinkalu described Malami’s time as Attorney-General as deeply politicised, advising him to refrain from public complaints. He maintained that if Malami now considers the EFCC’s actions political, it reflects the precedents set while he was in charge of the nation’s justice system.

The comments came in response to Malami’s assertion that the EFCC revoked his bail because he attended a political event in Kebbi State. Odinkalu’s intervention added a fresh layer to the growing public debate surrounding the matter.

However, the EFCC has rejected Malami’s claims, stating that his bail was affected because he failed to meet all five conditions attached to his provisional release. The commission described his allegations as unfounded, reiterating its non-partisan stance and urging him to comply fully with the terms of his bail rather than make what it termed misleading accusations.

Malami, who is currently under investigation over multiple allegations including money laundering, abuse of office, and terrorism financing, has continued to insist that he did not breach any bail conditions.
