December 23, 2024.
The shocking event has ignited widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding action and lamenting the high levels of corruption within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to a tweet by a concerned user, Miyakee (#mimara_concept), the kidnapper was a regular customer at Akande’s POS store. Known for buying food and gifting money to the little girl, the man had gained her trust. However, on that fateful day, he reportedly sent Mercy on an errand to buy a sachet of water. As she returned, he allegedly met her halfway and disappeared with her.
Despite the mother’s concerns, she was distracted by other customers. By the time she checked on her daughter, the man and Mercy had vanished. Desperate to find her daughter, the mother called the kidnapper’s number, which he briefly answered, stating he was near Sango under the bridge, but never returned her call. Now, the number is unreachable, and Mercy remains missing.
The case was filed at the local police station, but disturbing reports emerged that officers demanded a staggering N40,000 from the mother: N10,000 to report the case and N30,000 to track the suspect’s phone number.
One Twitter user shared the grim details: “The mom has paid N8,000 for her statement, and another N2,000 for photos of her missing child. To track the kidnapper’s phone, she needs to pay N30,000 and get a court affidavit – but due to the holidays, that’s not possible until the 27th.”
The Ogun State Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, responded with an SMS, but no further action has been confirmed. Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi (#Princemoye1), expressed shock at the officers’ alleged extortion, calling it “inhuman and unprofessional.” He promised to personally handle the case and urged the family to contact him directly for assistance.
As the search for Mercy continues, the case raises serious concerns about the practices within the police force and the urgent need for reform.
