Okonkwo Set For Super Eagles Debut After FIFA Switch Gets Green Light
According to Ireporter Online, Nigeria-born goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has expressed strong eagerness to make his senior debut for the Super Eagles after finally becoming eligible to represent the country following FIFA approval of his international switch from England.
The 24-year-old, born in Camden to Nigerian parents, completed his nationality change last month, having previously represented England at youth level during his development years at Arsenal.
Reports indicate that Okonkwo’s decision to commit to Nigeria was influenced after a meeting with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle in London during the Unity Cup in June 2025, a tournament Nigeria went on to win. His eligibility now places him in contention for a potential call-up for the upcoming Unity Cup and June international friendlies against Portugal and Poland.
Speaking in a Nigeria Football Federation-branded video, the Wrexham goalkeeper expressed his excitement about the opportunity to represent the country of his heritage, describing it as a major honour and a long-awaited dream come true.
“It’s an honour being allowed to play for your country. I am so excited, I can’t wait. To finally have the opportunity is incredible,” Okonkwo said.
Okonkwo joins a competitive group of goalkeepers in the Super Eagles setup, which includes Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, Amas Obasogie, Maduka Okoye, and promising youngster Ebenezer Harcourt.
At club level, Okonkwo rose through the Arsenal academy system before gaining experience on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz. He later joined Wrexham on loan in 2023, with the move made permanent a year later.
Since then, he has established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, making 121 appearances and playing a key role in two promotions. In the current season, he featured in 44 matches across all competitions, keeping 10 clean sheets as Wrexham narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion.
