Omokri Urges Tinubu To Release Nnamdi Kanu On One Condition

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Omokri made this appeal via his Twitter handle on Monday, stating that declaring a state of emergency in the South-East due to ongoing insecurity would be unwise.

According to Omokri, such a declaration would only worsen the situation and serve as a significant public relations victory for IPOB. Instead, he advised Tinubu to establish a Southeast Development Commission and allocate the funds that would have been used to deploy soldiers to the region towards rapid infrastructural development in the Southeast.

In his statement, Omokri emphasized the need to approach the challenge holistically.

He proposed that supporters of a peaceful Nigeria should convince President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu on the condition that Kanu renounces violence as a means of pursuing his agenda and commits to promoting his political or social policies peacefully and democratically.

Omokri argued that declaring a state of emergency and deploying security forces to the Southeast would lead to clashes with Kanu’s supporters, ultimately reinforcing the conditions that initially gave rise to the IPOB movement.

He believed that such actions would result in a public relations victory for IPOB and further anti-Nigeria sentiments among moderate Southeasterners.

On the other hand, Omokri contended that if President Tinubu opts to establish a Southeast Development Commission and invests the resources intended for military intervention into rapid infrastructural development, it would significantly reduce anti-Nigeria sentiment among the Igbo population and potentially secure massive votes from the region in future elections.

Omokri cautioned that acceding to the request for a state of emergency could have unintended consequences and suggested that President Tinubu should learn from the mistakes of the past and create different and improved circumstances to address the situation.
