made this statement during a meeting with officials from the Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI) at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.
The elder statesman praised the efforts of NSYEI, urging them to work diligently towards uniting the region and, by extension, the entire country.
He asserted, “Only through unity can the north overcome its numerous challenges, which makes the formation of the Northern Star movement both commendable and timely.”
Babangida highlighted that unity is crucial for addressing the region’s difficulties, making NSYEI’s initiative both timely and important.
The NSYEI delegation, led by former Sokoto State governor Attahiru Bafarawa, co-chairperson Hajia Naja’atu Mohammed, and Director-General Dr. Abdullahi Idris, shared Babangida’s sentiments.
They stressed the significance of unity among the diverse people of the north, enabling the region to advocate effectively as a unified entity within the Nigerian federation.
In related news, the Secretary of the Eminent Elders Forum, Dr. Akin Fapohunda, has accused certain northern elites of maintaining control over Nigeria for over forty years through tribalism and selfish interests.
During an appearance on Arise News discussing the northern opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, Fapohunda argued that the North has long held Nigeria hostage with policies like federal character and the quota system, which have only benefited a select few elite groups.
He said, “The North, at the flip of a switch, is quick to shout Northern interest. Southerners remain passive, often dismissing tribalism as a topic of discussion. The North has exploited this for decades, and it’s time for a reckoning. The South should no longer carry the burden of the North’s inefficiency.”
Fapohunda stressed that Nigeria must recognize that its unity is fractured, urging for regionalization and a more honest conversation about the divisions between the North and South.
